According to the consumer group Public Citizen, the concern about Avandia has been long term.. The group released an internal government memo from nearly five years ago which contained warnings from Federal investigators that Avandia might cause heart failure. The memo, dated July 16, 2002, analyzed 47 early reports to the FDA of patients who went into heart failure and had to be hospitalized while taking the drug. Congestive heart failure, or CHF, is a life-threatening condition that comes about when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the rest of the body.
